The City of Tampa has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at tackling the pressing issue of housing affordability in the area. With a significant financial commitment of over $82 million from the City of Tampa and the Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), efforts are being made to make Tampa a more affordable place for both renters and homeowners.
Nicole Travis, the City of Tampa’s Administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity, emphasized the importance of addressing the current affordability challenges. She stated, “If we do not act on today’s affordability challenges with a strong response, these issues will linger and intensify. We want to continue to be the city that offers both an affordable lifestyle and exceptional economic opportunities. Housing affordability is an economic imperative, impacting the strength and resilience of our community.”
The Tampa Housing Implementation Plan aims to bridge the gap in the city’s housing supply and outlines specific goals set by the Tampa City Council. These goals include expanding temporary housing options, prioritizing support for seniors and individuals with disabilities, ensuring safe housing for low-income residents, leveraging City resources to address funding gaps, and stabilizing neighborhoods at risk of displacement.
To achieve these objectives, the plan entails investing more resources to support the development of affordable housing units and implementing land use changes to accommodate the housing needs of all Tampa residents in the long term.
