Tampa, FLA.- Tampa police officers came under fire while responding to a shooting incident in the 10000 block of 23rd Street. According to reports, officers received a call about a shooting inside a residence. When they arrived at the scene, two female victims who had been shot approached them for help.
Amidst the chaos, the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Michael Banks, opened fire on the officers. In response, 32-year-old Officer Darren Gibson fired shots at Banks, but none of them hit their intended target. Fortunately, the officers managed to apprehend Banks a short time later.
Tragically, upon entering the residence, the officers discovered another victim, an adult woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased victim has not yet been released pending notification of her next of kin.
Authorities believe that the suspect and the victims were acquainted with each other, although the nature of their relationship is still being investigated. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed condolences to the family of the deceased woman and wished a speedy recovery to the injured victims. He emphasized the bravery of the officers, stating, "In every case, our officers run towards the danger, and fortunately today none of the brave officers were injured. It’s calls like these that are stark reminders of the dangers affiliated with this profession."
