From February 8, 2023 post.
In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we kicked off the Black Love Film Series at Tampa Theatre with a special showing of The Wiz.
We had so much fun celebrating with members of our community, some who were visiting the theatre for the first time. One of the attendees, Ms. Claudette Jones remembers visiting the Tampa Theatre in 1978 to see The Wiz. At the time, it was a school field trip for St. Peter Cleaver Catholic School. This time around, Ms. Jones is accompanied to the theatre by her aunt.
Before watching the iconic musical, kids participated in a costume parade--check out the little girl dressed as Ketanji Brown Jackson and the little boy who dressed up as a magician. The audience also enjoyed a special reading by Sonya Bryson-Kirksey, National Anthem singer for the Tampa Bay Lightning and one of the founders of the Sonni Reading Project.
Thank you to everyone who came out to help kick off the Black Love Film Series! Don't miss the upcoming classics next: SUN, FEB 12 | To Sleep With Anger SUN, FEB 19 | Coming to America SUN, FEB 26 | Cabin in the Sky
