The University of South Florida women’s lacrosse team will travel to Gainesville to play against No. 7 Florida on April 7, with the opening draw scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN+. This game marks only the second meeting between the two programs.
The matchup comes after South Florida’s dramatic double-overtime win over Liberty, which was the first such finish in program history. The Bulls overcame multiple three-goal deficits and a rain delay before Maggie Newton scored the winning goal with just over two minutes left in double overtime.
South Florida’s defense played a key role in their recent victory, allowing only one goal over the final 37 minutes and forcing 17 turnovers while collecting 26 ground balls. On offense, Sofia Chepenik, Ava Uphues, and Elise Grissett each surpassed the milestone of scoring more than 25 goals this season.
Florida enters Wednesday’s contest riding a six-game winning streak and is among national leaders in scoring offense, averaging more than sixteen goals per game. The Gators recently defeated No. 16 Colorado behind strong play from sophomore goalkeeper Susan Radebaugh at Donald R. Dizney Stadium—a venue where they have posted a record of 144 wins and just 24 losses all-time.
This season is only South Florida’s second since launching its program last year under head coach Mindy McCord, who was named as USF’s first head coach in May of 2022 after previously leading Jacksonville University’s women’s lacrosse team for thirteen seasons.
