The University of South Florida softball team is preparing for the 2026 season with a focus on its infield, which features experienced returners and versatile players across all four positions. Head coach Ken Eriksen emphasized the importance of a strong infield, stating, “I think that if we’re strong up the middle, we start out in a good position.”

The team’s middle infield includes three returning athletes known for their defensive skills and flexibility. Kathy Garcia-Soto is recognized for her elite defense and ability to play multiple positions but is especially valued at second base. Eriksen said, “She’s one of the best gloves we’ve ever had. She covers so much ground at second base and can go left or right at the drop of a hat.”

Alex Wilkes transitions from the outfield to shortstop this season, bringing what Eriksen described as “enthusiasm and a strong presence on the field.” He added, “She’s tough not to have in the lineup every day.” Karhys Pierce adds further depth by providing options at both second base and shortstop. According to Eriksen, “All three can hit, all three can run, and all three have a great sense on the ball field. I expect to have those three in the lineup quite a bit — probably at the same time.”

Lexi Beldowicz also contributes to middle infield depth with her ability to play several positions and provide offensive strength.

At first and third base, Jamia Nelson and DaNia Brooks return as reliable defenders. Eriksen noted their contributions: “They both played the corners really, really well. They give us some really good dimensions at first and third.” Jocelyn Wilkes emerged during fall practice as another option for both corner spots. “She’s so much fun to have on the ball field,” Eriksen said.

Additional flexibility comes from Beldowicz’s capacity to move to third base, Alice DeWaters’ progress at first base, and Kacey Wilkes’ ability to shift from catcher to infielder when needed.

Eriksen summarized his outlook by saying: “We’ve got plenty of good options. No question about it.” He also acknowledged the challenge of fitting so many capable players into limited roles: “It’s tough when you have as many good infielders as we do. Trying to fit them into four spots is a good problem to have.”

Season tickets are available starting at $65; fans can add general admission baseball tickets for an additional $25 by visiting gousfbulls.com or contacting 1-800-Go-Bulls.

Under coach Ken Eriksen’s leadership since 1997, USF Softball has achieved 18 NCAA tournament appearances—including reaching the Women’s College World Series in 2012—and produced multiple All-Americans along with individual award winners such as Georgina Corrick, who became the first player ever to earn the NCAA Pitching Triple Crown by leading Division I softball in ERA (0.51), victories (37), and strikeouts (418) during 2022.
