A Tampa woman has been arrested following threats to shoot patrons at a local cigar lounge. The incident occurred on June 15, 2025, when Bernida Smith, aged 38, was taken into custody by Tampa Police officers after she allegedly threatened individuals at a lounge situated on the 1700 block of E 7th Avenue.
Witnesses reported that security personnel had asked Smith to leave the premises for bringing in unauthorized liquor. In response, Smith reportedly threatened to return and open fire at the establishment. Shortly thereafter, she parked her vehicle outside the lounge and approached with a shotgun.
Security guards employed by the lounge managed to disarm Smith before any harm could occur. Officers patrolling nearby arrested her soon after.
Chief Lee Bercaw praised the actions of both the security staff and police officers: “The quick and courageous actions of the security guards, combined with the rapid response of our officers, prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy.” He emphasized this incident as a reminder of the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and community members in maintaining safety.
Upon searching Smith and her vehicle, authorities discovered two additional firearms. She faces charges including two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one felony count of shooting within or into a building, and one misdemeanor count related to improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon or firearm.
