Construction has begun on the first two segments of Tampa’s Green ARTery, a 22-mile pedestrian and bicycle network designed to connect neighborhoods, parks, schools, and attractions around central Tampa. The project aims to create a seamless trail for cyclists, joggers, and families.
The initial construction is taking place in the Old Seminole Heights and Lowry Park Central neighborhoods. These areas will see improvements such as nearly 4,000 feet of new sidewalks, fresh paving, lower speed limits, solar-powered crosswalk beacons, improved roadway markings, and signage. These enhancements align with the Tampa MOVES Plan and Vision Zero goal to eliminate deadly crashes.
The Old Seminole Heights segment covers 1.4 miles along Hamilton Heath Drive, E. Park Circle, and Park Drive from N. Nebraska Avenue to 22nd Street Park. The Lowry Park Central segment spans 1.1 miles on W. Kirby Street, N. River Shore Dr., and N. Florida Avenue between North Boulevard and E. Bird Street.
Originating in 2010 as a neighborhood-based initiative involving over 20 groups, the Green ARTery aims to enhance walkability and bikeability while connecting communities to green spaces.
The combined cost for these segments is approximately $1.7 million. Funding comes from FDOT grants covering more than half of the expenses; the rest is sourced from multimodal impact fees collected from new developments for transportation improvements.
Both segments are expected to be completed by mid-August with the entire loop projected for completion within five years.
