Hundreds of roadway cave-ins, primarily resulting from hurricanes Helene and Milton, have been repaired in Tampa. City crews are currently addressing the remaining cave-ins, with completion expected in the coming weeks.
Cave-ins differ from potholes as they form underground due to voids that require more intricate repairs. Water infiltration during storms erodes the soil beneath the pavement, leading to these underground collapses.
The City of Tampa’s Stormwater and Wastewater departments have addressed over half of the 800-plus cave-ins reported after last year’s hurricanes. Approximately 270 remain to be fixed.
The Wastewater Department alone faced around 700 cave-ins throughout last year’s hurricane season. The Stormwater Department received about 130 reports since October 1, with approximately 100 already noted before the storms hit.
To expedite repairs before the next hurricane season, Tampa is collaborating with Kimmins Contracting to complete this work.
