The Tampa Police Department has introduced a new initiative called “Signal 87 Summits” aimed at strengthening community partnerships. These summits are designed to provide platforms for residents, local businesses, and police officers to engage in discussions about neighborhood-specific issues.
The first Signal 87 Summit is scheduled for May 27, 2025, at Ragan Park. The event will start at 5:30 PM and is intended to be family-friendly. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet neighbors, connect with business partners, and interact with the officers and staff serving their area. This summit is the first of six bi-monthly meetings planned throughout different city sectors.
The program builds on existing outreach efforts like Town Hall Tuesdays and Front Porch Roll Calls. “Signal 87” refers to the Tampa Police code for “Community Meeting.” Chief Lee Bercaw stated, “By embracing our police code in the name of this new program, we are signaling our unwavering commitment to genuine collaboration.”
A key goal of these summits is to bolster Neighborhood Watch (NHW) Groups by encouraging established leaders to share insights with neighboring communities. This approach supports Tampa’s status as one of the safest cities of its size.
Additionally, the summits aim to empower residents in developing solutions for neighborhood concerns that may not need police intervention. Representatives from various City of Tampa departments will be present to guide attendees on accessing city resources related to mobility, neighborhood enhancement, parks and recreation, and solid waste management.
