The Tampa Police Department announced on April 17 that it is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred late Thursday night on W. Swann Avenue.
According to police, the incident happened at approximately 10:37 p.m. on April 16, when an adult male was seated in an unlit section of the westbound travel lanes of W. Swann Ave, just east of S. Gomez Ave. For reasons still under investigation, the man was in the roadway when he was struck by a white 2017 Volkswagen Passat driven by a 25-year-old woman traveling westbound.
Police said limited lighting and the unexpected presence of the man in the road prevented the driver from seeing him in time to avoid impact. The man died at the scene. Authorities confirmed that neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash and stated that no criminal charges are expected against the driver, who remained at the scene and has cooperated fully with law enforcement.
Traffic Homicide Investigators are working to positively identify the deceased and notify his next of kin as their investigation continues.
