The Tampa Police Department has announced a significant initiative aimed at enhancing officer safety and community well-being. Through donations from Tampa Bay hospitals and corporate partners, every patrol vehicle will now be equipped with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). The initiative is supported by Advent Health, BayCare (St. Joseph’s Hospital), HCA Florida Healthcare, Tampa General Hospital, OnX, and ZOLL.

A news conference to announce this initiative was held on June 23, 2025, at the Tampa Police Headquarters.

Mayor Jane Castor stated, “This incredible initiative, made possible by the unwavering support of our Tampa Bay hospitals and corporate partners, truly exemplifies what it means to be Tampa Strong.” She emphasized that equipping patrol vehicles with AEDs empowers officers to act as first responders in cardiac emergencies.

Chief Lee Bercaw added that having AEDs readily available will allow officers to provide immediate assistance during cardiac emergencies. He expressed gratitude for the generosity of all partners involved in making Tampa safer.

Funding for this project came through donations made to Rise Tampa, Our Police Foundation. Andreas Dettlaff, Vice-President of the foundation, remarked on the collaboration’s alignment with their motto of supporting those who protect and serve.

Leaders from participating hospitals shared their perspectives:

John Couris of Tampa General Hospital described the initiative as a “game-changer,” noting that it equips law enforcement officers with tools for immediate medical assistance.

Phil Minden from BayCare/St. Joseph’s Hospital said their health system is proud to contribute to ensuring high-quality assistance during critical times.

Jyric Sims from HCA Healthcare West Florida Division highlighted their commitment to human life improvement through this partnership.

Jennifer Wandersleben from AdventHealth West Florida Division noted that placing defibrillators in patrol cars offers officers an opportunity for timely intervention in emergencies.

Lori Peters from ZOLL emphasized the importance of equipping first responders with necessary tools like ZOLL Powerheart G5 AEDs for delivering immediate care.

This announcement marks a pivotal moment for public health and safety in Tampa, showcasing collaboration between healthcare systems and law enforcement agencies.
