The Tampa Police Department has announced a new initiative to enhance officer safety and community well-being. Through the collaboration of several Tampa Bay hospitals and corporate partners, every patrol vehicle will be equipped with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). This effort involves contributions from Advent Health, BayCare (St. Joseph’s Hospital), HCA Florida Healthcare, Tampa General Hospital, OnX, and ZOLL.
Mayor Jane Castor emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it empowers officers to act as first responders in cardiac emergencies. “This is a testament to our community’s commitment to innovation and collaboration,” she said.
Chief Lee Bercaw expressed gratitude for the support from local partners, noting that having AEDs in patrol vehicles could potentially save lives by providing immediate assistance during cardiac emergencies.
The funding for this project was facilitated through donations made to Rise Tampa, Our Police Foundation. Andreas Dettlaff, Vice-President of the foundation, highlighted the significance of supporting officers with essential life-saving tools.
Leaders from participating hospitals and companies shared their perspectives on the initiative:
John Couris of Tampa General Hospital described it as a “game changer” for emergency response. Phil Minden from BayCare/St. Joseph’s Hospital mentioned their commitment to improving health services as part of their mission. Jyric Sims from HCA Healthcare West Florida Division reiterated their dedication to enhancing community well-being. Jennifer Wandersleben of AdventHealth noted the impact AEDs have in saving lives daily. Lori Peters from ZOLL emphasized the importance of equipping first responders with necessary tools.
The announcement marks an important step towards public health and safety improvements in Tampa.
