Tampa Police announced on May 5 the arrest of a suspect in connection with the robbery and assault of an 82-year-old woman that occurred on May 1. The incident took place near a bus stop at West Hillsborough Avenue and North Habana Avenue, where the victim was attacked and robbed, resulting in her losing consciousness. She has since returned home and is recovering from her injuries.
Chief Lee Bercaw said, “The outstanding investigation, community assistance, and pro-active policing that led to a quick arrest in this case is a testament to the strength of our city. It should be clear that in Tampa we all work together to hold criminals accountable, especially those who would foolishly choose to target our neighbors.”
Police credited a community member who witnessed the crime and provided detectives with crucial video footage captured by his Tesla vehicle. Investigators determined that the suspect matched the description of an individual involved earlier that day in a bicycle theft at North Florida Avenue and East Columbus Drive.
Officers located the suspect on Tuesday afternoon near Nebraska Avenue while focusing patrols on gathering leads. Joseph Patrick Wren, age 57, was taken into custody without incident at North Nebraska Avenue and East Annie Street. He has been charged with robbery; police have not yet released his arrest photo.
