Tampa Police have taken Jefry Maldonado Hernandez into custody following a fatal traffic incident early Saturday morning. The 25-year-old has been charged in connection with the crash that led to the death of an adult male at the intersection of Busch Blvd. and Armenia Ave.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an innocent man this morning, and our Victims Advocate will work to aid his grieving family as they navigate this incredible loss,” stated Chief Lee Bercaw. “This was not an accident, but the result of a driver’s criminal actions and reckless decision to operate a vehicle while impaired. DUI is a completely avoidable act that destroys lives. We are committed to standing with this family throughout their profound loss, ensuring a thorough investigation and the pursuit of justice.”
The incident occurred on May 24, 2025, around 3:23 am when Maldonado Hernandez was driving a black Dodge Ram pick-up truck eastbound on W Busch Blvd. Simultaneously, a green Lexus RX300 driven by an adult male in his early 60s was stopped facing southbound on N Armenia Ave at W Busch Blvd. As the light turned green for the Lexus, it proceeded southbound across W Busch Blvd.
Witnesses reported that Maldonado Hernandez accelerated to “beat the light” when it changed to yellow. Evidence indicates he ran the red light at high speed, resulting in a collision with the Lexus and causing his vehicle to flip onto its side.
The driver of the Lexus sustained severe injuries from the crash and was transported quickly to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at 4:06 am.
Officers noted signs of impairment in Maldonado Hernandez during their investigation. He faces charges including Vehicular Homicide, DUI Manslaughter, and Driving Without a Valid Driver’s License (with Death or Serious Bodily Injury). He has been taken to Orient Road Jail.
Following repairs and investigations, roadways previously closed have now reopened.
