The City of Tampa has opened cooling stations after the city experienced its first recorded 100-degree day on Sunday, July 27. This temperature surpassed all previous records since record-keeping began in 1890. The move comes as forecasters predict continued high temperatures in the upper 90s and a heat index between 106 and 112 degrees.
A Heat Advisory is currently in effect from noon to 7:00 p.m. today. In response, the city has made several locations available for residents seeking relief from the extreme heat. The designated cooling stations are Barksdale Adult Activity Center at 1801 N. Lincoln Avenue, George Bartholomew Center at 8608 N. 12th Street, and Cuscaden Pool at 2800 N. 15th Street.
The operating hours for these cooling stations are Monday, July 28 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Tuesday, July 29 through Wednesday, July 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
According to the City of Tampa, “Cooling Stations are open to all residents, especially those without access to air conditioning, and offer a safe, air-conditioned space to cool down.”
