New affordable homes are set to be built in Tampa as part of the third phase of the city’s Infill Housing Program. Local developers, including several minority and family-owned businesses, have received 20 lots at no cost in exchange for building and selling homes to income-eligible buyers.
This latest phase differs from previous ones by allowing eight developers to construct townhome-style residences. The new approach is expected to result in up to 45 units for Phase III, bringing the total number of affordable homes created through the program to around 295. Construction will take place in East Tampa and Central Park.
“Past the brick and mortar, these homes represent stability, safety, and prosperity for generations of families,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “With each home we are also supporting our local developers by creating work opportunities and uplifting neighborhoods with new investment.”
According to city officials, the median home price in Hillsborough County is now about $420,000. However, properties built under this initiative will not exceed $400,000.
“The Infill Housing Program is just one of the many ways we are helping local families achieve housing stability,” said Abbye Feeley, administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity. “It takes a lot of legwork and results do not happen overnight, but when families finally move in, our sense of accomplishment is overwhelming.”
Developers interested in participating must apply and are chosen through a random lottery process.
