Thanks to the ongoing support from the Yerrid Foundation, children in Tampa will have the opportunity to learn fishing while interacting positively with local law enforcement. This initiative marks its fourth consecutive year, with over 100 children aged 15 and under participating in a free fishing clinic.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Picnic Island starting at 9:00 am. It is organized by the Yerrid Foundation in collaboration with Rise Tampa, Our Police Foundation. The clinic aims to teach young participants about fishing rules and enjoyment under the guidance of Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw, members of the Tampa Police Department (TPD), including the Marine Unit, and Captain Sergio Atanes along with other top charter captains from Tampa Bay.
Chief Bercaw emphasized the significance of this initiative: “The positive impact on our youth and community as a result of this initiative is immeasurable.” He further noted that “the Yerrid Foundation’s unwavering commitment allows us to continue building bridges of trust and mentorship, fostering a safer and more connected Tampa for everyone.”
Children attending will gain valuable fishing skills while enjoying an educational experience away from technology. The event also promotes mentorship opportunities between police officers, fishing captains, and young participants. Each child will receive a rod and reel combo to keep.
Additionally, the Yerrid Foundation’s contribution supports the RICH House program by providing resources for children in Tampa. This program offers after-school and summer school programming along with access to family social services. Each location is managed by a Tampa Police Officer who acts as a role model and liaison between residents and law enforcement.
