The Tampa Bay Buccaneers addressed the release of the NFL’s 2026 schedule on May 15, highlighting its unique features and expressing appreciation for the league’s schedule makers. The new season will include a record nine international games, two Wednesday matchups, three Christmas broadcasts, and a kickoff game that repeats last season’s Super Bowl pairing.
The topic is important for fans and teams alike because the order and timing of games can affect travel demands, rest periods, and opportunities for national exposure. The Buccaneers had known their opponents since January but only learned their specific game dates this month due to the complex process of organizing all 272 league games.
Scott Smith said there is an unusual aspect to this year’s lineup: “For the first time since 1991 and only the third time in team history, the Bucs will go an entire season without playing a pair of road games in consecutive weeks.” He added that after a Sunday night game in Chicago during Week Nine, Tampa Bay has a bye week before traveling to Detroit in Week Eleven. Smith said this break should help players recover before facing tough opponents such as Detroit, Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football, Los Angeles Chargers with quarterback Justin Herbert, and Baltimore Ravens led by Lamar Jackson. “From a simple wear-and-tear standpoint… it makes sense to favor a week off near the middle of the season,” Smith said.
Brianna Dix focused on personal benefits from this year’s slate: “Unrelated to the football field, I am thankful for a Thursday Night Football matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.” She explained that being from Texas means she rarely sees her family during football season but now can spend time with them thanks to how her work aligns with this particular scheduling quirk. “Thank you schedule-makers for providing me with an impromptu reunion with my family following the Thursday Night Showdown,” Dix said.
Gabriel Kahaian appreciated another feature: “It was a pleasant surprise to see the schedule makers award Tampa Bay with three consecutive home games to kick things off.” He noted these early-season home contests against Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, and Green Bay Packers could give Tampa Bay momentum at the start of their campaign.
Looking ahead through additional roundtable discussions over coming days—focusing on changes they would make if possible or most anticipated matchups—the team’s representatives emphasized gratitude toward those responsible for creating what they view as one of their more favorable schedules.
