On December 12, 2024, Congresswoman Laurel Lee expressed her support for the Judicial Understaffing Delays Getting Emergencies Solved Act of 2024 (JUDGES Act) following its passage in the House. The act aims to address the shortage of judges across district courts in the United States.

"As a former judge, I understand the importance of citizens having access to the courts and receiving a resolution for their cases in a quick and timely matter. Ensuring we have an appropriate number of judges will allow that," stated Rep. Laurel Lee. She emphasized that "the JUDGES Act represents a commitment to supporting the judicial branch and will pave the way for a federal court that can meet the needs of the public." She also acknowledged Congressman Darrell Issa's leadership on this issue.

The need for such legislation is underscored by over 700,000 pending cases due to insufficient judgeships nationwide. Specifically, Florida's Middle District Court faces challenges with more than 10 million residents and active caseloads per judge exceeding national averages by 20%.

Key provisions of the JUDGES Act include creating 63 permanent judgeships in phases from 2025 to 2035 and adding three temporary district court judgeships in Oklahoma. It also mandates evaluations by GAO on federal court efficiency and detention space needs, requires public release of judicial seat recommendations by the Judicial Conference, and authorizes additional federal case locations in Utah, Texas, and California.
