The City of Tampa's Department of Solid Waste has announced a temporary suspension of residential recycling collection due to the high levels of storm debris caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The suspension will be in effect on Friday, October 18, 2024, with services resuming on Monday, October 21, 2024. In the meantime, yard waste and recycling teams are collaborating with debris management contractors to clear neighborhoods and return the city to its pre-storm state.
Storm debris collection is ongoing, and residents are urged to follow specific guidelines for curbside disposal. Garbage services remain unaffected for residential customers, while yard waste and recycling services are paused until further notice. Commercial collection services continue as usual.
The McKay Bay Transfer Station and Scale House at 114 S. 34th Street remains open to the public for disposal needs. More information can be found at tampa.gov/solidwaste.
Residents have been provided with guidelines for curbside disposal options. Crews will collect damaged household items, construction debris, and vegetative storm debris from curbsides. Residents should separate household items from vegetative debris and keep them three feet away from obstructions like parked vehicles.
For those opting for self-disposal of mixed debris, the McKay Bay Disposal Complex is available during specified hours throughout the week. Tampa residents can dispose of storm-related debris free of charge by presenting a government-issued ID matching their account details.
Free drop-off sites have been set up at 22nd Street Park and Gadsen Park exclusively for vegetative storm debris disposal. These sites operate Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Customers can stay informed about service schedules by downloading the Tampa Trash and Recycling app or contacting the City of Tampa Utilities Call Center at (813) 274-8811.
New Tampa residents should reach out to Hillsborough County Solid Waste Management at (813) 272-5680 for information on storm debris collection schedules in their area.
