Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Laurel Lee (R-FL) released a statement following the House of Representatives' passage of H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The legislation aims to protect elections and ensure that only American citizens are eligible to vote.
Rep. Lee, who previously served as Florida’s Secretary of State and Chief Elections Official, currently chairs the House Administration Subcommittee on Elections.
“American elections are for American citizens only," stated Rep. Lee. "We all know that President Biden’s Border Crisis poses a clear threat to our elections system, as millions of illegal aliens have poured into our country at record levels. This bill advances much-needed reforms to current voting registration requirements that will allow each state to ensure only American citizens are casting ballots,” she added.
The SAVE Act intends to provide enforcement tools for states to verify voter rolls' accuracy and prevent non-citizens from voting in federal elections.
In her prepared floor remarks, Rep. Lee emphasized the broad support for citizen-only voting: “The vast majority of Americans agree that only citizens should be voting in our elections.” She further argued that ensuring non-citizens do not vote is essential for maintaining trust in the election process.
Rep. Lee highlighted recent instances of non-citizen voting and stressed the need for documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register for federal elections as a measure to enhance election security and minimize foreign interference.
The Congresswoman concluded by urging her colleagues to support the SAVE Act: “As a former elections official myself, I urge my colleagues to support the SAVE Act to enhance election security, minimize the risk of foreign interference, and restore Americans’ confidence in U.S. elections.”
