Historic Roy Jenkins Pool has reopened after being closed for nine months due to damage from Hurricane Helene. The pool, located in Tampa, underwent extensive repairs costing over $600,000. The renovations included replacing pool pumps, filters, air conditioning, and the elevator. Multiple departments from the City of Tampa participated in the repair efforts.
“The reopening of the historic Roy Jenkins Pool represents another piece of the community that has been restored after the impacts of last fall’s devastating hurricanes,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tony Mulkey. “Bringing this highly used pool back online provides residents the opportunity for health, wellness, and important water safety training. We look forward too seeing the pool full of activity as the summer heats up.”
In 2023, Roy Jenkins Pool saw an annual attendance peak at 28,880 visitors. Across all city pools that year, attendance reached 161,082.
The pool will operate with a summer schedule: Tuesday through Thursday from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M., Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. and then from 2:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., and Sunday from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
The Davis Island Swimming Pool was originally built in 1929 at a cost of $75,000 and renamed in honor of Roy E. Jenkins in 1965 for his contributions to youth programs and water safety in Florida.
