Congresswoman Laurel Lee, a Republican from Florida, and Congressman Marc Veasey, a Democrat from Texas, have introduced the Stopping the Theft and Destruction of Broadband Act. This proposed legislation aims to penalize individuals who damage or steal broadband lines, addressing an issue that impacts both communities and businesses across the United States.

“American consumers use broadband for a wide range of uses and expect to have uninterrupted service,” stated Lee. She added that broadband providers and government agencies work hard to protect communications infrastructure, but weak laws allow offenders to avoid consequences. “To safeguard critical infrastructure and protect consumers, we need stronger, clearer laws and enhanced enforcement, ensuring that those who maliciously harm our networks face severe criminal penalties,” Lee said.

Veasey voiced his support, emphasizing the need to tackle the increasing problem of broadband cable theft: “This legislation ensures stronger protections for vital infrastructure and enhances access to reliable internet for all Americans.”

The NCTA – The Internet & Television Association also expressed support for the measure. “We applaud Reps. Lee and Veasey for introducing the Stopping the Theft and Destruction of Broadband Act, which addresses the growing threat of vandalism to critical communications infrastructure,” they noted, highlighting the essential nature of these networks for public safety and national security.

The bill text is available for public reading and consideration.
