The City of Tampa Black History Committee, Inc. will host its 38th Annual City of Tampa Black History Celebration on February 6 at the Tampa Convention Center. The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 11 a.m.
This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Veterans: Celebrating 250 Years of Service and Strength.” The committee selected this theme to recognize the upcoming United States Semiquincentennial in July 2026 and to acknowledge the contributions of service members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Mayor Jane Castor said, “It’s an honor to work alongside so many City of Tampa employees who have protected our nation and now protect and uplift our community everyday as public servants. This celebration recognizes their service, honors our veterans, and celebrates the Black history that is central to Tampa’s story.”
Deanne King, WFLA morning traffic anchor, will serve as emcee for the program. The event will include a musical performance by Phyllis Wong, an award-winning gospel recording artist.
Tampa Fire Rescue Chief Barbara Tripp will deliver the keynote address. Chief Tripp is a U.S. Navy veteran and the first woman to lead Tampa Fire Rescue. She has more than three decades of experience in fire rescue services and became chief in 2021.
Local veterans who continue their service through city government and regional leadership roles will also be recognized during the celebration.
Katrina House, President of the City of Tampa Black History Committee, Inc., stated, “This Black History Month, we look forward to honoring all who have served and placing a spotlight on the vital contributions African Americans have made to the common good. Their love of country and courage in tough situations are lessons future generations must be told.”
The City of Tampa Black History Committee is a nonprofit group focused on promoting African American history, local cultural heritage, and academic achievement. Since its founding in 1999, it has awarded scholarships for college or vocational training to high school students in Hillsborough County.
