The Tampa Bay Buccaneers concluded the 2025 NFL season with an 8-9 record, ending their four-year reign as NFC South Champions. The team experienced a challenging year, finishing with a 2-7 run to close out the season. Defensively, the Buccaneers ranked 19th in total defense (337.2 yards per game), 27th in passing defense (238.2 yards allowed per game), fifth in rushing defense (99.1 yards allowed per game), 20th in scoring defense (24.2 points allowed per game), and last in red zone defense, allowing touchdowns on 69.8% of opponents’ trips.

Despite the team’s struggles, several defensive players delivered notable performances throughout the season.

Jamel Dean stood out among cornerbacks by allowing the lowest passer rating (41.3) when targeted, according to NextGen Stats for players with at least 35 defensive targets. He also recorded the second-lowest completion percentage (43.1%) when targeted under the same criteria. Since 2019, Dean is one of only 12 players with over 55 passes defensed, more than 10 interceptions, and multiple defensive touchdowns. According to team sources: “Dean has the length to disrupt the catch space and he can accelerate quickly to top-speed. He is physical along the boundary and has effective change-of-direction from press.”

Tykee Smith became the only player in the league with over 100 tackles, more than 10 passes defensed, and at least three takeaways during the season. He joined an exclusive group of Buccaneers since 2008 who have reached at least 100 tackles, over 10 passes defensed, five or more tackles for loss, and two or more sacks in a single season. Smith led all safeties with 13 passes defensed and was fourth among safeties in hawk rate—interceptions plus passes defensed—with a minimum of 30 defensive targets at a rate of 26.3%. He was tied for fifth most tackles for loss among safeties as well. Team evaluators noted: “Smith effectively mirrored routes underneath and took on blockers with aggression. Smith delivers hard hits at the point of contact and plays with solid awareness in coverage.”

Yaya Diaby became one of seven players since 2008 to achieve at least twelve tackles for loss in each of his first three seasons—a group that includes Lavonte David, Maxx Crosby, Aaron Donald, Khalil Mack, Micah Parsons, and J.J. Watt. In addition to leading Tampa Bay with seven sacks this year, Diaby posted nineteen quarterback hits and sixty-two pressures—ranking fourteenth overall—and had a pressure rate of sixteen-point-three percent according to NextGen Stats for those with at least three hundred fifty pass rush snaps. The organization described his impact: “The power rusher is lightning quick out of his stance and has the lateral burst for twists/stunts. He separates at the point of attack with a lethal punch and helped bolster Tampa Bay’s defensive front.”

These individual achievements provided highlights amid an otherwise difficult campaign for Tampa Bay’s defense.
